Thankfully, a satisfying ending helped make some of the pain worth it. I often find it difficult watching films depicting abusive relationships. I'll forever associate her with "diggie biscuits" (digestives) now. She made me laugh out loud numerous times and it's fitting she got the last line of the film. I have to admit, it was Dame May Whitty who stole every scene she was in. Having just seen Joseph Cotten as a serial killer in Shadow of a Doubt, it was refreshing to see him as the good guy here. I started to feel like I was going mad about 3/4 through the film too. The Charles Boyer character of 'Gregory' will forever be etched in my mind as one of the biggest bastards in cinematic history. Worth the watch alone for Ingrid Bergman - in the role she won an Oscar for. I'd heard so much about this - and the whole term 'gaslighting' itself, so finally gave it a watch. However, if you haven't seen a movie in a very long time and are re-discovering it then exceptions may be made.
